Umani Ronchi claim that this “CaSal di Serra” Verdicchio was one of the first Verdicchio in the Castelli dei Jesi production zone to be produced from a special selection of high quality grapes from a single vineyard when it was first produced in the early 1980s. Today “CaSal di Serra” is no longer a single vineyard wine, but instead combines a selection of the best grapes from four of Umani Ronchi’s vineyard sites with an extended period of lees aging post-fermentation, to produce a wine that sits towards the middle of Umani Ronchi’s range of Verdicchio.
Matured only in stainless steel tanks (for around five months) this 2012 iteration of this “CaSal di Serra” Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi is nonetheless wonderfully intensely and complexly flavoured (something we’ll attribute to the high quality of the grapes, fermentation with only natural yeasts and an extended period of maturation on the lees post-fermentation). There’s an abundance of white peach, nectarine and melon flavours with an extremely unusual level of persistence once swallowed. Dry, medium bodied and with a juicy and nicely integrated acidity this is a compelling wine that surprises at this price.
