Peter Lehmann “Weighbridge” Un-Oaked Chardonnay (2011)

The Peter Lehmann winery was built in 1979 and the first vintage released in 1980, however it wasn’t until 1982 that the winery was named after founded Peter Lehmann. Initially only making wine from fruit purchased from other local growers in the Barossa (South Australia), today local growers still provide the grapes for 98% of the production of the Peter Lehmann winery but the Peter Lehmann winery does now also own some vineyards of its own which account for around 2% of the fruit required. Whilst this perhaps doesn’t seem like a significant quantity of fruit, the dramatic expansion in production of the Peter Lehmann winery over the last 30 years means that it would be impossible to satisfy fruit demand without huge capital investment in land and vineyards.

Whilst a high quality premium range of Peter Lehmann wines is now produced, much of the Peter Lehmann winery’s expansion has been driven by the sale of less expensive wines, one modern example of which is this 2011 Peter Lehmann “Weighbridge” Un-Oaked Chardonnay. Retailing for around £8 per bottle in the UK, this 2011 Peter Lehmann “Weighbridge” Un-Oaked Chardonnay is available from a huge number of wine merchants and indeed is present on many restaurant wine lists.
