Montes “Montes Alpha” Cabernet Sauvignon (2007)

Montes’s “Montes Alpha” Cabernet Sauvignon was the debut wine for the Montes winery when it was released in 1989 and the “Montes Alpha” Cabernet Sauvignon remains one of Vina Montes’s best known wines today. Founding partners at Vina Montes: Aurelio Montes and Douglas Murray remain the guiding hand at Vina Montes today and this 2007 “Montes Alpha” Cabernet Sauvignon can be viewed as a direct descendant of the wine that helped them launch the winery 20 years prior to this vintage. 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot, this 2007 “Montes Alpha” Cabernet Sauvignon hails from what is probably the most famous of Vina Montes’s vineyard holdings, their “La Finca de Apalta” Estate, within the Apalta Valley (Chile).

The fruit destined for this 2007 “Montes Alpha” Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from Vina Montes’s steep slopes above the valley floor, around 40 kilometres from the Pacific Ocean. Limited yields and an extended ripening season ensure that only top quality Cabernet Sauvignon grapes make their way into this 2007 “Montes Alpha” Cabernet Sauvignon. After vinification, this 2007 “Montes Alpha” Cabernet Sauvignon saw 12 months maturation in French oak.

Intense ruby, with a hint of garnet at the rim, this 2007 “Montes Alpha” Cabernet Sauvignon displays this oak aging in its colour. An above average alcoholic content of 14.5% is also displayed when this 2007 “Montes Alpha” Cabernet Sauvignon is swirled.

Aromatically, this 2007 “Montes Alpha” Cabernet Sauvignon is soft, deep and shows considerable complexity. Blackberry and figs lead the aromas of this 2007 “Montes Alpha” Cabernet Sauvignon, with cedar and tobacco also evident. More than moderately pronounced, the aromas of this 2007 “Montes Alpha” Cabernet Sauvignon deepen and thicken as air permeates the wine.

On the palate, this 2007 “Montes Alpha” Cabernet Sauvignon is dry, and medium to full-bodied. Soft blackberry and cherry form the bulk of the palate of this 2007 “Montes Alpha” Cabernet Sauvignon, with a considerable sense of structure lying behind this initial fruit. A velvety mouth-feel shows well integrated tannins, although there is the slightest hint of alcohol heat on swallowing. Long in the mouth, there is also a persistent and lifted finish to this 2007 “Montes Alpha” Cabernet Sauvignon that shows its quality.

Whilst suitable for drinking now, this 2007 “Montes Alpha” Cabernet Sauvignon will also continue to develop in bottle for the next decade.

Montes “Montes Alpha” Cabernet Sauvignon (2007)

Score: 87/100 – This 2007 “Montes Alpha” Cabernet Sauvignon is not as fruit-forward as some Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon, however is more “old-world” in character and indeed more age-worthy as a result. This 2007 “Montes Alpha” Cabernet Sauvignon is a very accomplished and refined Cabernet Sauvignon

Value for Money: 8/10 – Priced at £10 per bottle, this 2007 “Montes Alpha” Cabernet Sauvignon represents a top quality Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon that is available at an accessible price.
