Jacob’s Creek “Classic” Cabernet Sauvignon (2009)

Everyone who has ever drunk more than one glass of wine has heard of Jacob’s Creek (the producer of this 2009 Jacob’s Creek “Classic” Cabernet Sauvignon). It is sign of how successfully Jacob’s Creek has brought their products to the mass market that they are so well known.

Set up in 1847, Jacob’s Creek (or Orlando Wines as it was originally known) was set up by a young Bavarian immigrant to Australia, Johann Gramp. Eventually named “Jacob’s Creek” in honour Johann’s first vineyard site (which sat alongside “Jacob’s Creek” – a “creek” being a small river) Jacob’s Creek is now one of Australia’s (and indeed the world’s) largest wine producers.

Now owning vineyards across all of the main wine producing areas of Australia (including New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia), Jacob’s Creek has access to a huge range of fruit when it comes to crafting it’s wines. Carrying the geographical designation of “South Eastern Australia”, this 2009 Jacob’s Creek “Classic” Cabernet Sauvignon can be made from Cabernet Sauvignon grapes sourced from across any of Jacob’s Creek’s vineyard holdings within New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia (Australia’s most important wine regions).

Blending Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from across the large “South East Australia” zone of production in order to make this 2009 Jacob’s Creek “Classic” Cabernet Sauvignon should allow Jacob’s Creek to maintain a consistency of style across vintages in this wine.

In the glass, this 2009 Jacob’s Creek “Classic” Cabernet Sauvignon is a ruby colour of moderate intensity. An alcoholic content of 13.5% abv is lower than much Australian Cabernet Sauvignon. When swirled, aromas of black cherries and blackberries mingle with a slight hint of minty herbaceousness, although this 2009 Jacob’s Creek “Classic” Cabernet Sauvignon remains fairly simple and indistinct on the nose. In the mouth, much the same is true. Dry and medium bodied, this 2009 Jacob’s Creek “Classic” Cabernet Sauvignon shows moderately long black fruit flavours with a hint of liquorice, moderate and gentle tannins and reasonable levels of acidity.

This 2009 Jacob’s Creek “Classic” Cabernet Sauvignon is a simple but enjoyable wine, best drunk no later than 2 years after release.
