Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais Nouveau (2011)

Georges Duboeuf is known as the “King of Beaujolais Nouveau” and come the third Thursday of November each year lavish Beaujolais Nouveau parties are thrown around the world by Georges Duboeuf to announce the latest release of Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais Nouveau to the world. (This 2011 Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais Nouveau arrived at the American Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais Nouveau launch party this year in a chauffeur-driven Cadillac for example!)

Whilst not as popular as it once was, it is still estimated that up to a third of Beaujolais is released as Beaujolais Nouveau each year. Georges Duboeuf is the largest producer of Beaujolais Nouveau and thus perhaps has the greatest interest in promoting it. With the regards to the 2011 vintage of Beaujolais Nouveau, Georges Duboeuf declared that 2011 was an “incredible mill├ęsime” that “will top every excellent year in the Beaujolais wine hall of fame”.

Produced using carbonic vinification techniques (i.e. vinification in the absence of oxygen – a very unusual technique for red wines) Beaujolais Nouveau and indeed this 2011 Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais Nouveau will likely show slightly confected fruit flavours and very low tannins as a result.

In the glass, this 2011 Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais Nouveau is a vivid purple colour of limited intensity. Alcohol is light at 12.5% abv, with the legs of this 2011 Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais Nouveau dissipating quickly after it has been swirled.

Aromatically, this 2011 Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais Nouveau shows simple red cherry aromas, along with a suggestion of pear drops and even a little banana. This slightly sweet, boiled sweet character is carried through to the palate which exhibits high acidity and low tannins. The length of flavour of this 2011 Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais Nouveau is short, with no real nuance entering the finish before it fades.
